left the studio just in time to catch morning rush hour.
today’s shoot was cancelled just as we finished tweaking the lights, before i received the script. full day’s pay for 1 hour of waiting.
some of the most amazing acting on “Six Feet Under” happens when no one is saying anything.
reading about the demise of traditional terrestrial media transmission, and what may replace it. http://tinyurl.com/6afjg8
Ken Burns’ The Shakers: a serviceable intro to a once prosperous now dead communal culture, their story told in broad, familiar strokes.
Six Feet Under: a soft moody quilt, enfolding you in timescapes many times the sum of moments, salty with the tears & sweat of the living.
Hellboy II: favorite scenes: the poetic toy soldier animation of the bedtime story; the Miyazaki morality of the forest elemental.
Shrek the Third: the fairy tale pantheon goes to the mall and high school, until the valley girl princes rise above their cultural legacy.
Space Chimps: cute & entertaining for kids, a couple throw-away laughs for parents, predictable but harmless amusement, totally G-rated.
A Year In Provence: a tepid TV adaptation of the book, appealing enough that i want the food i see, but not so good i can taste it.
observing light chatter drifting across the ‘net and around the world, like fluff in the breeze.
watching ol’ school Hollywood studio promotional films (thinly disguised as thoughtful documentaries).
“Misery” (1990): one of the few decent Stephen King film adaptations, driven by Kathy Bates’ compelling Oscar winning performance.
The Wire #4: betrays the visual chops — and a sense of humor about HBO — to shoot a richly informative scene with no dialog except “fuck”.
The Omega Man: a post-dystopian Halloween party. “The NRA vs Church of the Zombies”. easy listening, fast driving, bad acting & soul momma.

The Riches (#1-3): reaching with a promise we really want it to catch, grab and shake, the writing treads like a dancer who didn’t rehearse.
Paris Is Burning: another documentary about a cross section of a subset of a subculture showing outcasts co-mingling with other outcasts.
